Description
The screen wall dates to the early 19th century and sits between Gilmerton House and the Home Farm. It is a Gothick-detailed rubble wall with red sandstone dressings. The wall is partially hidden by a large, modern farm shed on its eastern side, which is considered a reversible addition. It was likely designed to be symmetrical, featuring blind pointed-arch windows and terminating in slightly projecting bays with crenellated parapets and small, blind traceried windows. The wall originally shielded Gilmerton House from views of former cartsheds, a granary (listed separately as Eight Arches), other outbuildings, and a row of single-story cottages to the west. The former stables located to the east are separately listed. Historic Estate Plans references are RHP1394 and RHP1393.
