Description

Invereil House, located on Dirleton Road in North Berwick, is a three-storey, plain Baronial house built in 1899 by architects Peddie and Washington Browne. The building is constructed from snecked red sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a moulded string course that encircles the structure above the ground floor and an eaves course with raised margins.

The southeast elevation has three central bays, highlighted by a stone bracketed, balustraded balcony on the first floor, which is accessed through a doorway with a strapwork panel above. Above this is a crowstepped gable that contains a dated shield panel. To the right of the central bay, there are three windows on the ground floor and bipartite windows above, while the left flanking bay has single windows and a door in the outer left bay, framed by a pilastered, moulded surround and topped with a Dutch bonnet panel. The oak door features wrought-iron studs and hinges. The second-floor windows are adorned with pedimented dormer heads. The outer right bay is advanced and gabled, with bipartite windows on both the ground and second floors. A conical-roofed stair tower is located in the re-entrant angle, featuring a panelled door below corbel courses.

The northeast elevation presents a near-symmetrical U-plan with corbelled, conical-roofed stair turrets in the re-entrant angle, and a balcony at the first floor in the left turret. The gable ends are similarly windowed, except for the ground floor, and feature carved panels above the second floor, with crowstepped detailing. The side elevations are irregular. The windows are sash and case types, with small-pane upper sashes, some of which are fully small-pane. The crowstepped gables have beak skewputts, while the coped gable skews are supported by consoled skewputts. The building has moulded coping on the stacks and a slated roof.

Inside, some original details remain, including tiled vestibules, panelling, and plasterwork.
