Description

Bunkerhill is a two-storey Cotswold-style mansion designed by Sir Robert Lorimer and built in 1904. It has a rectangular plan. The building is constructed of mannered sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and chamfered margins, featuring stone mullions.

The south-facing (entrance) elevation is characterised by a moulded, semi-circular archway leading to a recessed porch, positioned off-centre to the right. Above the porch is a tripartite window. Irregularly placed openings to the right include a transomed bipartite and tripartite window. A gabled bay is intercepted by a wallhead stack to the right, with two diamond stacks above. A decorative carved lintel adorns the gablehead light. Two advanced gabled bays to the left of centre embrace a full-height, four-sided, canted Elizabethan hall window. Bipartite windows are present in the gabled bays, with an Elizabethan stair window to the left gable, and bipartites to the west side of the stair window bay. A recessed gabled bay is located to the outer left, featuring paired tripartites at ground level and a three-light window above.

The north-facing (road) elevation has three advanced bays at centre, with an arched doorway containing raised voussoirs and a short flight of steps in the central bay. A large canted ground floor window is present in the gabled bay to the left of centre, with tripartite lights, a four-light window at the first floor, and a bipartite window in the attic. Crenellated parapets are above the centre and extend to the two bays right of centre. A chamfered right angle contains bipartites to the advanced bays; tripartites are in the flanking recessed bays. A full-height canted gable is positioned at the outer right with bipartites. Paired bipartites are found at ground level in the outer left gabled bay with a first floor tripartite window above.

The west elevation features a raised, battered stack at centre, with two diamond stacks above. A decorative lintel is positioned above a single light at ground level to the left, and a bipartite window is located at the first floor to the right.

The east elevation incorporates a service court at ground level, with a central archway detailed similarly to the north elevation, and two gabled bays behind, the left bay being advanced.

Lead-pane glazing is used in the casement windows, with some plate glass below the transoms. Decorative lead gutter heads have been retained. Gabletted coping and carved skewputts are present at the gable heads to the west end. Swept eaves are evident on two Arts and Crafts style gable heads at the east end of the north and south elevations. The roof is slate covered, with moulded coping to the stacks.

The interior retains high-quality finishes throughout, including panelling and chimneypieces, and incorporates a galleried hall with vine detail to the plasterwork ceilings. An external rubble retaining wall also exists.
