Description
Oaklea is a late 18th century house formed by the combination of a 3-bay and a 2-bay single-storey cottage. The construction is of random rubble, with renewed rough pointing to the margins. The main entrance is on the west side, with windows flanking it. The cottage to the right is slightly lower and has two windows, the one on the left having been a former doorway. The windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered in red pantiles, with brick skews, and features rendered stacks. The rear of the house has seen little change. It has a group value with ‘Thorstone’ to the east. Historical references include M King’s ‘Athelstaneford’ (1987), the Statistical Account of 1799, and a Gilmerton Estate Plan from 1784.
