Description

This is a late 18th-century cottage, likely built around 1780, situated within a row of similar cottages in Athelstaneford. The cottage was originally created as part of a feu from the Kinloch of Gilmerton estate, which aimed to improve the village. It is constructed from random rubble with red sandstone dressings, some of which have been renewed. The front façade features a centrally positioned door, with a single window to the left. A three-light canted bay window has been added to the right side. The original sash and case windows retain four panes of glass, whilst the canted bay window features plate glass in the lower sash. The roof is covered in red pantiles with straight skews, and includes a brick stack. The rear of the cottage has been significantly altered with the addition of a porch and a large dormer window providing access to the attic. The cottage forms a group with the adjoining ‘Abbotsford Cottage’ to the west. Historical records, including a plan of the Gilmerton Estate from 1784, and the Statistical Account of 1799, document the cottage’s origins.
