Thorstone, Athelstaneford

This is a late 18th-century house formed from the combination of three single-story, three-bay cottages. The house is constructed of random rubble with a lined harl finish, and has concrete margins. The openings have been altered; a central doorway is present, flanked by windows. Other doorways have been blocked. The left side of the house has three irregular windows with modern glazing, while the right end cottage features two windows and a single window to the gable, with lying pane glazing. The roof is covered with red pantiles and has straight skews, with brick stacks. The rear elevation is largely unaltered. The building is set within a group context with 'Oaklea' to the west. Historic records, including a plan of the Gilmerton Estate from 1784 and the Statistical Account of 1799, document the property, along with a 1987 study by M King.
