Carrouse, Main Street, Athelstaneford

This is a late 18th century cottage located on Main Street in Athelstaneford. The building is single-storied and built with random rubble, featuring red sandstone margins. It consists of four irregular bays, with a door centrally placed to the left and two windows to the right, and one window to the left. The eastern gable end is blank, and rear openings have been altered, marked by brick margins. The windows are sash and case with modern glazing. The roof is covered in red pantiles with straight skews, and brick stacks are present.

The cottage was originally a feu from the Kinloch of Gilmerton Estate at the end of the 18th century. Planning consent was granted in May 1991 for alterations and an extension, including the removal of a rear chimney and porch.

The building is designated as a building of group value with the adjacent cottage to the west, Cromdale. Historical records include a feu plan from the Gilmerton Estate in 1784, and references in The Statistical Account of 1799, along with a publication by M King in 1987.
