Cromdale, Main Street, Athelstaneford

This is a late 18th-century cottage located on Main Street, Athelstaneford. It is a single-story building constructed with random rubble and harl pointing, featuring four irregular bays with enlarged openings framed by grey sandstone margins. The front facade has a door positioned to the right of center, with two windows to the left and one to the right. Openings at the rear have also been enlarged. The windows are sash and case style with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered in red pantiles with tiled skews, and brick stacks are present. The cottage was originally a feu from the Gilmerton Estate at the end of the 18th century. It is recognised as having group value, being listed alongside the adjacent cottage, 'Carrouse'. Historical references include M King's work on Athelstaneford (1987), the Statistical Account of 1799, and a plan of the Gilmerton Estate from 1784.
