Tolbooth, High Street, Musselburgh

The Tolbooth in Musselburgh was built between 1731 and 1733, with a date of 1762, and underwent alterations in 1875, followed by renovations in 1885 and 1901. It is located behind the main street and is oriented at right angles to it. The building has two storeys and is three windows wide, topped with a piended slate roof. The exterior is constructed of ashlar, featuring a rusticated ground floor and quoins.

The ground floor has three arched openings with projecting impost moulds and keyblocks, which have been closed off with two windows and a door. The first-floor windows are adorned with Gibbs architraves and alternating pediments, two of which are segmental and one triangular. A quarter turn forestair leads to a porch on the first floor, which provides access to the first-floor hall. The building also features six-pane sash windows. At the rear of the Town Hall and Tolbooth, there is a large mid-19th century hall that has windows facing the rear court.
