Description

The Town Hall, built in 1787, is a Grade II listed building located at Town Quay in Fowey. It is constructed from granite ashlar and features wedge-shaped lintels, with dry slate roofs that are parallel, although the rear roof is lower. The building has a rectangular plan, typical for town halls, with a meeting room situated above the market hall.

The exterior consists of two storeys, with the hall located over a basement. The front is symmetrical with three windows and a seven-bay arcade of round arches on the ground floor. The windows are possibly original or exact 20th-century copies, featuring 24-pane hornless sashes. The first floor has similar sash windows on each return elevation, while the rear includes two windows that resemble sashes. Most openings of the former open arcade on the ground floor have been partly blocked, but the round arches and impost string continue on the returns.

At the rear, there is an altered flight of granite steps with some original iron railings on the left. The original first-floor doorway has been blocked, and there is a later doorway leading to an enlarged window opening on the far left. To the right of the staircase, there is a wide elliptically-arched ground-floor doorway. Inside, the Town Hall retains its original king-post roof structure.
