Description
The Tolbooth, now a public hall, dates from the mid-18th century and was partly rebuilt after a fire in 1872. It is constructed of hammer-dressed sandstone with ashlar dressings and features a slate roof and brick stacks. The building has two storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a three-bay front arranged in a 1:3:1 pattern. The central bay and corners are accentuated by giant rusticated pilasters.
The main entrance consists of central panelled double doors with a fanlight, set within a segmental-headed arch that has a flat surround. The ground floor has eight 12-pane windows, while the first floor features tall 12-pane sash windows. The ground floor windows have flat surrounds, where traces of the navies of former guilds can still be seen. The upper windows are topped with wedge lintels made of vertical sets. There are raised bands at the first and attic floors, and a square turret with a pagoda top and oval louvres is located at the centre of the roof ridge, with end stacks on either side.
On the left gable wall, there is a panelled double door with an oriel staircase window above it, and to the left of this door is a blocked window with a flat lintel of vertical sets.
