Description
No. 14 High Market Place is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, with later additions and alterations, including an increase in height. The building was originally cruck framed and features coursed rubble sandstone on a cement rendered plinth, with hammer-dressed stone in the upper courses. It has a pantile roof and brick stacks. The original layout was a 2-cell, direct-entry plan with opposed doors, and a later staircase and service outshut were added at the rear.
The house is two stories high with a three-window front. There is a four-panel door approached by stone steps located to the right of the center. On either side of the door, there are three-light horizontal sliding sashes with glazing bars, and three 2-light sliding sashes on the first floor. The steeply-pitched roof has end stacks.
Inside, there is a late 18th-century corner cupboard with panelled doors set in a fluted architrave in the room to the left. In the room to the right, a spice cupboard with a carved and dated door is preserved, inscribed with "GS 1678 FN." At least one pair of crucks is still visible in the ground floor room to the right.
