Description
The pair of houses at 16 and 18 High Market Place date primarily to the 18th century, although they have earlier origins. The front of the houses is rendered, while the rear is built of coursed rubble sandstone. They have a concrete pantile roof and brick stacks, one of which has been rebuilt. Originally constructed with a three-cell layout, including a hearth passage, a staircase was added as an outshut.
The houses present a two-storey, three-window facade. Stone steps lead to a four-panel door with a rectangular fanlight, centrally located to the right. There are three large-paned horizontal sliding sash windows, each with three lights, and without sills or lintels. A fire window is blocked in the left gable, while the right gable has an enlarged fire window. Two stacks are at each end, and one is in the centre.
Internally, the hearth beam remains in the central room. A pair of cruck roof timbers are preserved in the roof space above the wall separating the rooms to the left.
