Description
Dating to around 1840, 4-5 Red Row is part of a terrace of ten single-storey, two-bay estate cottages built in the Gothic style, with a central pend. The cottages were recently restored; the end cottages project further at the rear, featuring a higher ridge line and a skew division. Constructed of roughly squared and snecked red sandstone with droved ashlar dressings, the detailing includes cavetto moulded reveals and an eaves course. The front elevation features five Tudor-arched doorways on each side of a similarly arched pend (now renewed), with a pointed window between each door. Pointed arch sash windows with a traceried pattern in the upper sashes are present. The rear of the cottages is harled. The roof is covered in red pantiles, with ashlar coped skews and ten coped stacks. These cottages were built as part of the Wemyss Estate housing and relate to buildings at 11 and 12 Main Street and The Wagon Inn, which are listed separately. An Ordnance Survey map from 1854 depicts the layout.
