Description
1 Congalton Cottages is a pair of single-storey L-plan cottages built in the later 19th century, originally part of a group of six three-bay cottages that have since been merged into four. The cottages are constructed from purple rubble with droved grey ashlar dressings.
On the southeast elevation, there is a narrow passage dividing the six bays. Each longer wing features doorways located in the penultimate bays leading to the centre and in the returns at the re-entrant angles. The doorways are sheltered by consoled penticed slab porches, and there are strip fanlights above them. The outer wings have bank gables that are advanced.
The northeast elevation has irregular openings, some of which have been enlarged, and features gabled outer bays. A doorway has been inserted in the eastern range.
The east and west elevations show altered, irregular openings with a variety of glazing patterns, including both 4-pane and 12-pane sash and case windows. The cottages have coped stacks that are raised above in brick, with ashlar coped skews, and are covered with grey slates.
