Description

Brownrigg is a mid-19th century farmhouse that incorporates earlier elements. It is a two-storey building originally designed in a T-plan, with later wings and a single-storey service wing at the rear. The exterior features squared and snecked yellow sandstone with ashlar dressings, an eaves course, and chamfered reveals.

On the southeast elevation, the building has four bays, with the two central bays recessed. There is a Tudor-arched doorway in the left bay, which has a bracketed, gabled canopy and a fanlight with tracery. To the right of the doorway is a window, and above, there are two windows at the first floor that slightly break the eaves, set in steep crowstepped gabled dormer heads. The outer gabled wings are broad and advanced, with the outer right wing being a later addition. Each wing features canted bay windows at the ground floor, complete with a cornice and blocking course, likely added when the right wing was constructed. The left side has a single window at the first floor, while the right bay contains a stone bipartite window.

The northeast elevation, or rear, includes a small L-plan projecting wing at the angle of the main block, with a stair block positioned between, creating three gabled bays. To the left, there is a later wing that is slightly recessed. The fenestration is irregular, with a ground floor window in the main block and a blocked first floor window. There is a round-headed stair window and a crowstepped gabled dormer head above the first floor window of the wing. Two rear entrances lead into the piend-roofed service wing that is attached to the stair block.

The east and west elevations have single irregular openings, and there are various glazing patterns in the sash and case windows, with some modern plate glass present at the rear. The roof features crowstepped skews and moulded beak skewputts, along with diamond-plan corniced stacks that exhibit Jacobean details. The main block has triple ridge stacks, and there is a corbelled gablehead stack on the west wing, as well as a shouldered wallhead stack on the later east wing. The building is finished with decorative cans and grey slates.
