4-6 Ferrygate Cottages, Direlton

7-9 Ferrygate Cottages in Direlton date from the earlier to mid-19th century and consist of a single-storey, symmetrical U-plan range that was originally six farm cottages. The building is constructed from rubble red sandstone with droved ashlar dressings and features crowsteps on the south gables.

The south elevation has 16 bays and includes a central, advanced gabled bay with a 4-centred arched pend and a finial. Originally, there were two 3-bay cottages on each side, but two doors are now blocked. The outer bays are advanced gables with narrow windows and blind arrow slits in the gableheads, which have apex stacks.

The north elevation features flat-roofed modern additions. The east and west elevations each have six bays, formed by two symmetrical 3-bay cottages. Each cottage has a central door flanked by small lights on the outer sides and near square windows. The windows have been replaced with modern plate glass in square openings. The ridge and end stacks are harled and lined to resemble ashlar, and the roofs are slate.
