Description

4 Mair's Road in Darvel is a detached Scots Vernacular villa built in the late 19th century to early 20th century. It is one storey with an attic and constructed in rock-faced red sandstone, featuring polished ashlar dressings and an L-shaped plan. The villa has three bays, with the left bay being a short stroke of the L. The crow-stepped gable includes a single-storey coated bay window, with single windows on the sides and a tripartite window at the front that is both mullioned and transomed.

A dentilled corbel course runs beneath a crenellated parapet. The first-floor window is also tripartite, mullioned and transomed, with a hoodmould raised above the central window to accommodate a blank armorial panel. There is a lean-to porch in the re-entrant section, featuring a doorway to the right and a dwarf wall with a Roman-Doric column to the left. A door is located in the side of the end bay, with a glazed wooden screen to the right. The lean-to has a crow-stepped skew, and above the porch is a round-headed dormer with a transom and a fan in the tympanum, along with ogee skewputts.

The right bay has a bipartite mullioned and transomed window at the ground level and a dormer similar to that above the porch. The villa features a deep battered base course, a corbel course above the ground-floor windows, and a moulded eaves band. The east gable has a crow-stepped design with a single-storey canted bay on the left, which mirrors the front but has a bipartite window in the centre and another bipartite window above. The hoodmould is raised to an arch at the centre, with a single transomed window to the right of the bay at ground level. A chimney stack on the right of the gable projects slightly and tapers.

The west gable features a gable head chimney stack and a single tripartite mullioned and transomed window at ground level, with no base course or corbel course on this side. The windows are 2-pane sash and case, and the roof is covered with slate and adorned with terra-cotta ridge tiles, with a ridge chimney stack on the transverse wall. The villa retains its original cast-iron rainwater hoppers.
