Description
Riccarton Old Bridge, located over the River Irvine on Old Street in Kilmarnock, dates back to 1723. It is a three-span bridge featuring semicircular arches. The structure is made of coursed and partially tooled sandstone ashlar, squared rubble, and has a later tarmac roadway along with a paved pedestrian way.
The east and west principal elevations showcase the three spans with ashlar voussoirs and depressed arch rings. The central arch is slightly wider than the others. Triangular cut waters are present next to the piers and abutments, which have battered caps. The spandrels are made of squared rubble, and the parapet has chamfered coping that leads to slightly advanced moulded wing walls. Additionally, there are much later utility pipes attached to the outer elevations of the parapets, with the upper pipe on the west elevation partially boxed in by timber.
