Description

Riccarton New Bridge, built in 1839, is a three-span road bridge located over the River Irvine on Campbell Street in Kilmarnock. The bridge is constructed of ashlar stone and features a tarmac roadway along with a paved pedestrian walkway.

On the southeast and northwest elevations, the bridge has three segmental arches with channelled voussoirs. It includes projecting cutwaters that are superimposed onto plain pilaster piers flanking the central arch. Diagonal cut-waters lead into plain pilaster abutments at the outer edges of the flanking arches. The parapet has a roll moulded base topped with semi-circular copes.

The northwest elevation mirrors the southeast side of the bridge, but it has been altered due to road widening, making it appear more modern.
