Description
Caprington Castle is a battlemented mansion built around 1820 by Sir William Cuninghame, 4th Baronet. The castle retains many of its original features from an earlier fortress, with original drawings from 1797 still in the owner's possession. The principal facade is marked by a four-storey splayed centre tower that has machicolations and a parapet. It features sash windows with square-headed drip moulds and square corner turrets, as well as a porte-cochere. The castle is situated on a raised terrace with round corner bastions. Inside, the hall and staircase boast a groined plaster ceiling and other Gothic decorations. The walls of the dining room align with the "Keep," and the original turnpike stair remains intact.
