Description
The Old Rome Bridge at Gatehead, dated 1870, features two wide segmental arches that span the River Irvine. It is supported by pediment-capped pilaster buttresses, vermiculated voussoirs, and a central triangular cutwater. The bridge is constructed from coursed, bull-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, soffits, and coping, though there are some brick repairs to the cutwater. A roll-moulded string course runs along the structure. The pilaster buttresses flank the arches and form the end piers, rising slightly above the parapet and topped with pedimented caps. The cap of the central buttress is dated.
