Description
Fairlie House is a Regency mansion built around 1800 by Sir William Cuninghame-Fairlie. The house is rectangular in plan, with a basement area extending around all four sides. It has two principal storeys and attic dormers to the rear. The exterior is ashlar construction with a symmetrical facade of 1.3.1 bays. Subtle central projection, paired panelled pilasters, a low parapet, a moulded cornice, and a triglyph frieze are prominent features, as is the hipped slate roof. Five tall, panelled chimneys are arranged in a line along the ridge of the roof. A recessed, columned porch leads to an inner door with a fanlight above, accessed by a flight of steps. The main hall and staircase are illuminated by a large Palladian window on the half landing. The interior contains notable decorative features including fireplaces and four circular rooms. The building is of group value.
