Description
Smyllum House, built around 1800, is a mansion designed in a castle style. It has two storeys and a third storey in a central drum. The exterior is rendered with ashlar dressings and features a symmetrical battlemented south elevation. The central drum is accompanied by two smaller attached three-quarter round turrets, with one wide recessed bay and square angle towers on either side. The building has a battered plinth and a cill course on both floors. The outer towers and small turrets have narrow single lights, while the recessed bays contain large tripartite windows. The central entrance door is reached by four steps and is adorned with an elaborate doorpiece resembling a miniature castle. There are two sash windows on either side of the door, three on the first floor, and one on the second, all featuring hoodmoulds. The roof is piended and covered with slate.
The east return elevation includes one recessed bay with a northern flanking angle tower. At the rear, there is an eight-bay wing that rises three storeys, also battlemented, with a corbelled bartisan at the north end.
Inside, the main entrance leads to a pilastered rotunda that features a screen of pilasters and Roman Doric columns. There are round-headed niches between the doors. To the left is a reception room with Ionic engaged columns and pilasters flanking the windows, which include a marble chimney piece.
