Description

The Cemetery Chapel on Hyndford Road in Lanark was designed by William Cowie in 1912. This two-storey, square-plan chapel features a symmetrical Art Nouveau design that transitions to a Greek cross shape on the upper level. It has a three-bay open round-arched loggia extending to the northeast corner and a single arch leading to a small courtyard on the southwest, which is accented by small paired rectangular windows. Above the three single lights in the projecting first-floor bays are Diocletian windows, with small domes at the re-entrant angles that have narrow round-arched niches above them. A modillion cornice runs between the raised angle piers. The central dome is topped with a winged figure on a circular pedestal, flanked by four urns, and deep dentilled cornices add to the decorative elements. The entrance features a pedimented arched doorpiece supported by cherub-headed brackets, inscribed with the words, "though will not leave us in the dust, thou hast made us, thou art just." Large round-arched windows are adorned with decorative stained glass panels.

The chapel has small-pane windows and plain windows, with copper roofing on the small domes and metal roofing on the main dome. Cast-iron rainwater goods are also present.

Inside, the chapel showcases a refined classical decorative scheme, highlighted by a prominent stone altar or coffin table located to the south of the plan on a raised Sienna marble plinth. Additional stone features include an advanced corniced stone architrave to the north. The interior boasts a black and white polished marble floor, ashlar walls, and a plain circular dome with a small oculus at the apex. The doorways are lugged, featuring timber multi-panelled doors that lead to smaller rooms.
