Description

St Kentigern's Churchyard in Lanark features two burial aisles, a memorial vault, and several notable early memorials. The largest burial aisle is dedicated to the Lockharts of Lee and dates from the early 17th century. The Lockharts of Cleghorn aisle, located to the southwest, was constructed in 1693. Attached to the northeast corner of the Cleghorn aisle is a smaller memorial vault designed by William Purdie in 1931 for the Obstetric Societies of Edinburgh and Glasgow. This vault contains the 18th century grave-slab of Dr William Smellie, a pioneer of scientific midwifery. The burial aisles are surrounded by an 18th century graveyard, which features a boundary wall and an entrance on the north side.

The Lockharts of Lee burial aisle is built of rubble with a trussed open wood roof covered in grey slates. It has a single door in the west gable and two windows in the north and south elevations, all with chamfered surrounds. A high relief memorial is located at the east end. The Lockharts of Cleghorn aisle has rubble walls on the east and west sides, while the south wall is faced with ashlar. It is built against St Kentigern's Church and also has a grey slate roof. This aisle was originally topped with an entablature, featuring a frieze decorated with floral motifs. The crowstep-gabled memorial vault is made of ashlar and is roofed with slates.

The churchyard contains over 900 gravestones dating from the 17th to the early 20th centuries. The earliest gravestones are found in the southern section and are arranged in regular rows. Many of these early stones feature fine symbolic carvings and are of high quality.
