Description
Craufurdland Castle is an interesting and ancient residence of the Crawfurds of Crawfurdland. Built at different times, the central part is a Gothic castle-style mansion dating from around 1830 to 1840. It features a tall square tower in the center, a battlemented parapet, machicolations, and round corner turrets. Inside, there is a hall and staircase with a groined plaster ceiling, as well as stained glass and heraldic elements in the large pointed window above the doorway.
The west wing of the mansion incorporates an older tower that stands three stories high. This tower has an open parapet supported by continuous corbellings, with rounded angles and no projecting bartizan. Above this is the roof, which has crowstepped gables, and even higher is the caphouse over the staircase. The east wing, known as the King's wing, is from the 17th century. It has crowstepped gables, is two stories tall, and is constructed of random rubble, partly patched with harling. This wing contains a fine ornamental ceiling featuring the Royal Arms dated 1648 in square panelled rooms on the first floor.
