57 Magdalen Yard Road, Dundee

This is a villa, built around 1830 in the style of David Neave, and subsequently remodelled and enlarged. The original design was extended to the east and west by C and L Ower in 1873 and around 1890. It is a two-story building with a basement, constructed from ashlar stone.

The south elevation features a prominent, pilastered and corniced doorpiece, approached by railed steps with decorative cast-iron lamps. Two canted bays were added in 1873, flanking the doorpiece. A main cornice is continued to a blocking course, with a later raised parapet and a central scrolled pedimental feature. A set-back wing was added to the east around 1860, single bayed, featuring a ground floor window with an architraved and corniced surround. A large canted wing was added to the west around 1880, with ground and first-floor cornices, creating a segmental arch over a first-floor triple arched and keystoned window. A parapet tops this western wing.

The roofs are piended and slate-covered, with a timber finial at the west wing. The windows are sash and case with a late 19th-century pattern of two-pane glazing.

The interior has been subdivided, and features ornate woodwork in the western wing. Stained glass is found on the first-floor landing and on the west staircase.

The property is enclosed by rubble-built boundary walls and chamfered gate piers, with one pier now missing.
