Description

Victoria Chambers, located at 10 and 12 Victoria Road in Dundee, was designed by William Alexander in 1874. This building consists of three four-storey blocks of flats and business chambers, showcasing a Renaissance architectural style. The identical facades feature seven-window arrangements, spaced in a 3-1-3 pattern, and are adorned with pilasters that have facetted rustication at the ground floor and channel jointing on the first and second floors.

The ground floor is channelled, with architraved windows above segment-headed openings in the basement. Central doorways are arched and keyblocked, set within panelled pilasters that support twin consoles with pediments. The building is decorated with richly sculptured Greek key friezes. The first-floor windows are consoled and feature alternating triangular and segmental pediments along with recessed aprons. The second-floor windows are architraved above a cill string, and the main entablature includes a panelled frieze and a mutule cornice. The third-floor windows are also architraved, with a secondary upper cornice and a panelled parapet. The building has prominent central wallhead stacks with bracket cornices, as well as ridge stacks.

The roof is slate, and the windows are sash and case with a two-pane glazing pattern, as originally built. The gable facing Russell Lane is constructed of rubble, and the rear of the building is also rubble-built.
