Description

This building, located at 18 Victoria Road in Dundee, was designed by Frederick T. Pilkington of Pilkington and Bell in 1877. It is an unusual four-storey corner tenement featuring a ground floor shop with a mezzanine, taking advantage of the sloping ground on the Victoria Road side. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar bands at the level of the lintels.

The shop fronts were altered around 1958. The first-floor windows are adorned with flush pediments that feature incised chip carving, while the second-floor windows have segment-headed designs with keyblocks. The third-floor windows are set within a pilastered arcade designed in a Venetian style, featuring stilted segmental arches that are enriched with incised carving. These arches are interrupted by scrolls supported by ashlar stacks, which have elaborate copes on all three frontages.

The elevation facing Victoria Road has three widely spaced windows arranged in a 2-1 configuration. The Hilltown frontage is symmetrical with four windows, where the outer ones are bipartite. This elevation is divided by a corbelled chimney breast that features a central cartouche and is corbelled wider at each level. The third floor has six narrow lights arranged in an arcade, evenly spaced on either side of the stack.

On Dudhope Street, the frontage is mostly blind, with bipartite windows on the first and second floors, and two lights on the right side of the third floor. The angles are splayed and progressively corbelled to create a square shape at the third floor level. The area to the west was remodelled around 1958.

The building has a piended slate roof, and the windows are sash and case with a two-pane glazing pattern.
