Description
Hyndford House, located at 1 Hyndford Street in Dundee, is a Victorian villa built around 1870 and later enlarged by architects James Ireland and James McLaren in 1880. This eclectic building features a mix of single and two-storey elements with an attic, characterized by gabled roofs. The exterior is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings.
The west elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing advanced gabled wings. It has an off-centre plain segmental arched doorway, flanked by a canted window, a bipartite window, and a slit window. The right slit window is positioned in a gabletted dormer, while the left is in an advanced steeply gabled bay, both adorned with finials.
The right gabled wing, added in 1880, features a four-light canted bay that rises through three floors. The second floor includes round-headed windows with an oculus, hoodmould, and label stops. The design includes stop-chamfered corbels that extend out to a king post bargeboarded gablet.
On the south elevation, there is a later porch, along with single and tripartite windows on the ground floor and bipartite windows on the first floor. The roof features two bargeboarded gabletted dormers with finials, as well as a wallhead stack with shaped supports and three ridge stacks. The steeply pitched roofs are covered with slate.
The property is also marked by square pyramidal-capped gatepiers at Hyndford Street, which are complemented by an ornate cast-iron gate.
