Description

1-7 Ward Road in Dundee is a three-storey commercial building, originally a warehouse, designed by Charles Edward in 1869. It features a rectangular plan and is situated on a three-sided corner site. The exterior is constructed from snecked sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and has a piended slate roof. The building includes a base course and a corniced ground floor, which is slightly cut back at the elevations facing Ward and Constitution Road.

The ground floor has moulded round-headed door and window openings, with a continuous hoodmould. Some of these openings are larger and have been blocked from former doors. The first and second floors have windows set in recessed, round-headed two-storey panels, also with continuous hoodmoulds. Most of the windows retain their original four-pane timber sash and case glazing pattern, with round-headed windows on the second floor. The building features corniced stacks with uniform cream cans that rise behind the wallhead cornice, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.

On the Ward Road elevation, there are ten bays, with the bay at the far right set at a splayed angle. The ground floor has two pairs of large round-headed openings, with the right-hand opening of the left pair blinded, flanked by smaller openings, and an additional opening to the right at the splayed angle. There are ten windows on the first and second floors and two stacks.

The Constitution Road elevation has four bays, featuring a large opening to the centre left, with one smaller opening to the left and two to the right, along with four windows on the first and second floors and two stacks.

The Nicoll Street elevation also has four bays, with two large round-headed openings, a smaller opening to the left, and four windows on the first and second floors, along with one stack.

The interior has not been seen.
