Description

Dated 1885, 16-18 Whitehall Street is a four-story and attic commercial building of five bays, originally with shopfronts to the ground floor. The building is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar with a grey slate Mansard roof. The ground floor features modillion and corniced detailing, an open-work parapet, and a lintel band to the first floor. A consoled balcony extends across the three central bays of the second floor, protected by a decorative cast-iron parapet. A cill band is present at the second floor level, above which is a modillioned and corniced main cornice, followed by a fluted and dentilled lintel band. The wallhead has a corniced course topped with a balustraded parapet.

The windows are a mix of single and canted architraved designs, with pilasters on the first floor, colonette nook shafts and pilasters on the second floor, and shouldered, mannered volutes on the third floor. The windows have two-pane timber sash and case glazing. A pilaster defines the angle to the right, terminating in a swagged urn finial. Corbelled and corniced ridge stacks are also present.

The central doorway is mask-keystoned and round-headed, with a two-leaf panelled door within a pilastered doorpiece. An open pediment and cartouche date panel are set into the tympanum. The shopfronts to the left and right have been altered. The first three floors of the central bays each feature a single window, flanked by canted windows at the outer bays. Three round-headed dormers, each with bipartite glazing, are positioned to the left and right of the roof. The interior of the building has not been inspected. The statutory address is 14-24 (even numbers) Whitehall Street. The building is grouped for its architectural or historic interest with numbers 7 and 9 Whitehall Street.
