Description
The N.C.R. Works, located on Kingsway West in Dundee, is a factory building constructed in 1946 by Bennet, Beard and Wilkins. This horizontal, modern steel-framed factory was designed for cash registers and adding machines, featuring stock brick cladding with cream-coloured concrete margins and coping. The building is set within extensive gardens that include a company bowling green and tennis court.
The office block projects from the west side, with two-storey sides, while a taller, asymmetrical entrance and boardroom block is situated at the south end. The entrances are deeply recessed within projecting concrete surrounds, and there are balconies and recessed windows above, with the glazing pattern original to the west side but altered around 1980 on the south and east sides. A tall stair window made of glass bricks is located in the re-entrant angle, and the building has flat roofs along with three flagpoles.
On the southeast elevation, there is a single-storey manufacturing block characterized by low ground floor windows that punctuate a high screen wall. To the right, a low flat-roofed canopied canteen with a glass curtain wall projects outward. The east block of the factory is set back, with its east elevation clad in sheet metal, likely to accommodate future extensions. This block may have been reconstructed slightly later. The rear features a lower brick wall with occasional windows and canopied doors, and the gables have a saw-toothed roof illuminated from the east. The east block has a wider roof span.
The windows throughout the building are metal-framed 3-pane casements. The blocks at the rear are similarly constructed with stock brick and small windows, lacking margins. A taller boiler house to the east is pierced by portholes at the upper level. Additionally, there is a lodge to the southwest, also made of stock brick.
