Description
Mecca Bingo Hall, located at 106-110 Nethergate in Dundee, was designed by Joseph Emberton and John Fairweather between 1935 and 1936. It underwent restoration by Cooper Cromar from 1996 to 1997.
The building features an International Modern style with a prominent advertising tower that stands 87 feet high. This steel-framed tower is flanked by twin cylindrical drums, and the main fin has a glazed "waterfall effect." The outer section of the tower displays the lettering "MECCA," which was previously "PLAYHOUSE." The top section, above a horizontal rib, was formerly inscribed with "GREENS." Additionally, there is a modern canopy and entrance, which replaced the former stepped ribbed cove-lit neon lettering in silhouette.
