Description
St Paul's Church, located at 114 Nethergate in Dundee, was designed by Charles Wilson and built between 1850 and 1852, with shopfronts added by W M Patrick in 1936. This church features a cruciform plan in the Gothic style and is distinguished by its three-stage tower and spire, which stand between shopfronts. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, with coursed rubble on the sides and cream ashlar dressings, topped by a slate roof.
The north elevation showcases a central tower with angle buttresses and a pointed-arch entrance that includes a wooden traceried fanlight, nookshafts, dog-tooth moulding, and a hoodmould surrounding a tympanum. There are cusped lancets in the second stage on the north, east, and west elevations, and paired tall louvred lancets at the belfry stage, set in panels with a corbel table, which is interrupted by single louvred lucarnes that rise into the spire. The broached spire is adorned with angle pinnacles and a cross finial. Flanking the tower are porches with lean-to roofs covered in fishscale slate, featuring pointed-arch doors similar to the main entrance, with quatrefoils above. The north gable of the church has cusped lancets, angle buttresses, and finials. The shops are single-storey with flat roofs, plate-glass windows, and balustraded parapets.
On the east and west elevations, there are three simple lancets on the main body of the church, two in the re-entrants of the gabled transepts, and three smaller lancets on the ground floor of the gables. Above, there is a three-light traceried pointed window with a trefoil at the apex, along with gabletted ashlar skews and skewputts, and a gable stack.
The south elevation features a slightly projecting gable with three lancets and basement doors leading to the hall.
Inside, the church is galleried with a timber collar and hammerbeam roof, which is wide at the transept crossing and includes traceried ventilators installed in 1882. The woodwork was lightened in 1936 and 1958. An organ by Walker and Co from Ludwigsbury, Wurttemberg, and an oak pulpit installed in 1902 are notable interior features. The church also contains significant stained glass windows installed in 1898, 1910, 1911, and 1914 by Jones and Willis of Birmingham, as well as one in 1949 by A Russell. The main hall is located below.
