Description
74 Camphill Road in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is a large lodge and coach house designed by John Murray Robertson in 1882. The building features a mainly single-story and attic design with an irregular plan, characterized by half-timbering, stugged snecked masonry, and painted timbers and plaster. It has a plain red tile roof and brick stacks, with elongated, panelled, and coped oversailing stacks. The windows are primarily cross windows with single-pane casements and four-pane upper sections, and the half-timbered gables include a chamfered wallhead cornice and plain bargeboards.
On the north elevation, there is a segmental-arched entrance to the coach house on the right, flanked by windows and featuring a large hayloft opening with a bracketed cill and modern half-glazed doors at the gable wallhead. To the left, there is a single window at the ground floor bay, which terminates with rounded gatepiers and an enclosing wall.
The east elevation is irregular with four bays, featuring an advanced two-storey block on the left with an elliptical arched pend. The first floor is half-timbered with a single window and a pyramidal roof. The main elevation has four ground floor windows, with the second from the right built up from a door. There are paired M roof gables at the outer right, with one window at the left gable and two at the right, along with a set-back stack.
To the south, there is a large two-storey rectangular-plan laundry that is advanced from the main building but connected to the coach house by an early 20th-century extension for a motor car. The first floor drying room is half-timbered and features a central tripartite window with vents at the bottom and top.
Inside, there is an original chimneypiece with a round-headed grate in the entrance tower room, and a blocked elliptical arch in the east wall of the coach house.
