Description

8 Laurel Bank in Dundee is a semi-detached villa built around 1840 by David MacKenzie, with later additions to the adjacent property at No 6 by Ireland and MacLaren in 1875. The building is symmetrical, featuring two storeys and four bays. The front is made of ashlar stone, with a first-floor cill course, a main cornice, and a blocking course, while the sides and rear are constructed of coursed rubble.

The south elevation has advanced end bays topped with a pedimented blocking course and single-light inner bays. The windows are framed with architraves.

On the side elevations, there are three bays, with a central doorpiece that is pilastered and corniced, also featuring pedimental blocking courses and dies. The bay to the right is blind, and there is a corniced wallhead stack.

An extension was added in 1875 to the northeast wing, which includes a canted bay that extends through both floors to Prospect Place. This section has an encircling cornice and a three-storey Italianate square-section belvedere tower with projecting mutule eaves. There is a modern porch providing access to the upper flat.

The roof is piended and platformed, covered with slate, and features wallhead and ridge stacks. The windows are sash and case with a two-pane glazing pattern.

The property is marked by square pyramidal-capped gatepiers and low ashlar boundary walls along Laurel Bank, complemented by modern railings. There are high ashlar boundary walls along Prospect Place, which include a vehicular access point. A modern garage with a slate roof is also present.
