Description
The building at 4 Dudhope Place in Dundee is a surgery designed by David MacKenzie around 1840. It is a two-storey, three-bay villa in a picturesque Renaissance style, constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings. The building appears to be unfinished, featuring chamfered openings and harled sides.
The south elevation has three bays with a central corbelled doorpiece, a segmental arched window, and a small bargeboarded gablet above. To the left, there is a corniced canted bay that extends through both floors, topped with a shallow bargeboarded gable. On the right, an advanced bipartite bay has a hoodmoulded ground floor and a first floor that is corbelled out on curvilinear corbels, suggesting that a taller tower was originally intended. The gable is shallow and lacks eaves or bargeboards, and the finial is missing its ball.
The sides of the building are harled, featuring advanced gabled centres with segmental-arched lights on the first floor. The finials on these gables also lack balls. A flat-roofed extension for the surgery was added to the right around 1980.
The roof is covered with slate and has octagonal shafted stacks. The windows are sash and case, with two and four-pane glazing patterns.
Low boundary walls line Dudhope Street, topped with square ashlar pyramid-capped gatepiers, although the railings are missing. There are higher walls to the side facing Laurel Bank.
