Description
The Children's Centre at 1 Laurel Bank in Dundee is a detached villa designed by David MacKenzie around 1840. This two-storey building features a three by three-bay layout and is constructed of painted ashlar, with margined windows that are recessed at the ground floor. There is a later rubble-built extension to Laurel Bank, and the villa is situated prominently on a gusset site.
The west elevation has three bays and includes a central porch supported by columns with block capitals, topped with an entablature. To the right, there is a three-window bow. The main cornice adds to the architectural detail. The south elevation is symmetrical with three bays and features a central pedimented doorpiece, along with a main cornice.
The roofs are piended slate, with later dormers, including two canted ones. Tall coped stacks rise from the roofs. The original windows are sash and case with a 12-pane glazing pattern, while the bow features curved sashes. The addition has a 4-pane glazing pattern.
Low curved rubble-built boundary walls with square ashlar gatepiers enclose the property.
