Description
4 Prospect Place in Dundee is a pair of twin, two-storey semi-detached villas designed by David MacKenzie between 1850 and 1852. The buildings feature an ashlar front with coursed rubble sides and rear.
The south elevation has two bays, accentuated by angle pilaster strips and a vermiculated base. It includes two tripartite bays that are segmentally pedimented at the ground level and have corbelled sills at the first floor, topped with a main cornice.
On the side elevations, there is a slightly advanced three-bay center with an open pedimented doorpiece that has a keystone and consoles. The south side has two bays, while one bay is blind for No 4 and both are blind for No 6. There are service wings to the north featuring one-storey, piend-roofed wash-houses and two channelled wallhead stacks.
The north elevation consists of two single-bay, piend-roofed wings separated by a deep court.
Inside, the villas boast ornate plaster ceilings and marble chimneypieces, with stained glass in the stair area. The roofs are covered with slate and the windows are sash and case, featuring two and four-pane glazing patterns, originally designed with twelve panes on the sides and rear.
The property is further enhanced by tall square gatepiers, each with a vermiculated base, a dentil cornice, and an obelisk finial. Wrought-iron railings with cast-iron bud finials (some parts are missing) and coursed rubble boundary walls, which are high at the rear along Union Terrace, complete the setting.
