Description
This is a large, two-storey Italianate villa, likely dating from the mid-19th century and possibly enlarged from an earlier house. It is rectangular in plan and constructed of buff sandstone with painted dressings and a grey slate roof. The exterior features a prominent base course, a band course at first-floor level (with dentilled and moulded detail at the entrance porch on the west elevation), a bracketed cornice, and margined angles painted at ground floor level on the west elevation. Keystoned, moulded round-headed arches define the entrance porch. The ground floor windows are mostly tripartite or five-light canted, with pilaster strip margins, colonnette mullions, foliate capitals, and moulded round arched lights with a moulded, dentilled cornice and a patera frieze. The window surrounds have moulded, shouldered architraves. Most windows are sash and case with plate glass. Prominent stacks with channelled, corniced, and bracketed details rise from platform and piended roofs.
The west elevation has a round-headed, keystoned and cavetto-moulded doorpiece with pilasters and festooned brackets at the centre, with a new door formed from a former window. An open arch is present on the right return, incorporating tracery and paterae at the spandrels. Two four-pane windows are situated above a regimental badge of the Black Watch. A blank, architraved oculus is on the right return. The left bay of the main elevation has a corniced bipartite window at ground floor and a window at first floor. The bay to the right features a round-headed bipartite window at ground floor and two windows at first floor.
The south elevation incorporates a recessed three-bay block with a door formed from a former window at the left and two windows at the right; above are three windows at first floor. A distyle, flat-roofed Doric portico projects at ground floor. The left bay has a five-light canted window rising to a bipartite with side windows at first floor. The bay to the right has an advanced central bay with a tripartite window at ground floor and a bipartite at first floor.
The east elevation features a slightly advanced two-bay block with two round-headed windows at ground floor and two windows at first floor. To the right, a slightly lower four-bay block incorporates four bipartite windows at both ground and first floor levels.
The north elevation presents blank gables at the left and right, together with various doors and windows, including a stair window.
The interior retains richly moulded ceilings and cornices, original chimney pieces, and a well stair with carved newel posts and cast-iron balusters. A border-glazed stained and etched glass stair window is also present.
Immediately north of the main house is a former service wing, two stories high with single and bipartite windows, painted margins, and a piended roof.
A bull-faced retaining wall with coped ashlar panels and balusters extends south, connecting to the separately listed VC House to the east.
