Description
This is a late 19th-century villa, built in 1897 by James MacLaren and Sons. It is situated on falling ground in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, and is rectangular in plan, extending over two storeys and an attic, with a basement level. The villa is constructed of bull-faced snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof. Notable features include tall coped stacks, some retaining their original cans, and decorative hoppers and brackets. The original sash and case windows have multi-pane upper sashes, although some first-floor windows have been replaced with uPVC. A modern skylight has been added.
The west elevation features a central doorway flanked by narrow lights, with a single window to the left. Paired windows at the first floor break the eaves, set within dormerheads. A diagonal, full-height window bay adjoins the southwest angle, with a single window at ground floor level and paired windows in a wallhead dormer above.
The south elevation has a full-height, canted window to the right, with a jerkin-roofed verandah supported by turned timber columns. A single window is located on the ground floor to the left, while a smaller, asymmetrical window sits at first-floor level. The southeast corner mirrors the design of the southwest angle.
The east elevation includes a basement door at the left, two windows at both ground and first floor levels, and an asymmetrical arrangement. A massive stack with dormers sits at the shoulders of the elevation.
The north elevation is three-bay, with an entrance at first-floor level. A later garage is adjoined to the left; the centre bay is piended with an off-centre door and dormer, and a lower bay is situated to the right.
At the corner of Camphill Road and Hermitage Road, offset gatepiers with caps mark the entrance, alongside rubble walls with rounded coping along the north and west boundaries.
The building is listed for its interesting rooflines and the roofed attic verandah. Historic references include details in Broughty Ferry Architectural Development Plans, Book 3, pages 39-43, and files relating to James MacLaren held by D M Walker.
