Description
The property at 1-9 Reres Gardens, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is a two-storey and attic Italianate villa, attributed to James MacLaren and likely dating from circa 1858. Originally known as Airlie Lodge, the villa has an irregular plan and is constructed of buff sandstone coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, and a grey slate roof. Architectural details include a band course at the first floor on the south elevation, a wallhead course and bracketed eaves to the tower, deep eaves exposing rafters and purlins, and plain bargeboards. First-floor windows on the south elevation feature mannered margins and 10-lying-pane sash and case windows; other windows have 2-, 4-, 8-, and 12-pane glazing, though some have been replaced with uPVC. Corniced stacks are topped with decorative cans.
The south elevation is four-bay, asymmetrical. A prominent tower, second from the right, features a door with a keystoned round-headed arch, a fanlight, and a bracketed cornice, along with a window at the first floor, paired round-headed windows at the second floor, and a flat roof. To the right, a slightly advanced gable has a tripartite canted window at ground floor and a window at first floor. A recessed bay to the left features a window at both ground and first floors. Further to the left, a slightly advanced gable includes a 5-light rectangular window at ground floor and a window with a blind box at first floor.
The east elevation has modern additions at ground floor level. A recessed block on the left has two windows at first floor. A notably shaped stack rises from the wallhead through the roof. A gable to the right has a later canted window at first floor and a small window in the gable. A lower, projecting two-storey block abuts the far right with a window at ground and first floor.
The north elevation features lower, two-storey, harled blocks with piend roofs projecting to the left and right. One block has a modern door at its center alongside a bipartite window to the left and a single window to the right; the first floor mirrors this layout, with a single window in the right return gable. The other block has a blank gable, two doors and a dormerhead at the left return, and a window and two dormerheads at the right return. A tripartite stair window is recessed within the main house’s gable.
The west gable has a conservatory projecting at ground floor and a window at first floor.
The interior retains some original chimneypieces and moulded compartmentalised ceilings, along with a staircase featuring turned balusters. The property is set within a boundary wall and is accessed via two pyramidal capped ashlar gatepiers, with a rubble wall adjoining them on both sides.
