Description

Attributed to James MacLaren, circa 1858. Formerly Airlie Lodge. 2-storey and attic, irregular-plan Italianate villa. Buff sandstone coursers, coursed rubble, ashlar dressings, grey slate roof. Band course at 1st floor S elevation, wallhead course and bracketted eaves at tower, deep eaves with exposed rafters and purlins, plain bargeboards; 1st floor windows at S elevation have mannered margins and 10-lying-pane sash and case windows, 2-, 4-, 8- and 12-pane elsewhere some out of character uPVC frames at NER; corniced stacks, with decorative cans. S ELEVATION: 4-bay, asymmetrical. Door with keystoned round-headed arch, fanlight and bracketted cornice at 3-stage tower 2nd bay from right, window at 1st floor, paired round-headed windows at 2nd and at left return, flat roof; slightly advanced gable at right with tripartite canted window at ground floor, window at 1st. recessed bay at left with window at ground and 1st floor; slightly advanced gable at far left with 5-light rectangular window at ground floor, window with blind box at 1st. E ELEVATION: out of character modrn additions at most of ground floor, recessed block at left with 2 windows at 1st floor, widely-shouldered stack with margined angles rising from wallhead through roof; slightly advanced gable at right with later canted window at 1st floor, small window at gable; lower projecting 2-storey block clasping at far right with window at ground and 1st floor. N ELEVATION: lower 2-storey, harled, piend-roofed blocks projecting at left and right. Block at left; modern door at centre with bipartite window at left, single at right, bipartite and 2 singles at 1st floor, single window at ground and bipartite at 1st at right return gable. Block at right; blank gable, 2 doors and dormerhead at left return, window and 2 dormerheads at right return. Tripartite stair window at recessed gable of main house. W GABLE: conservatory projecting at ground floor, window at 1st floor left. INTERIOR: some original chimneypieces and moulded compartmentalised ceilings, well stair with turned balusters. GATEPIERS AND BOUNDARY WALLS: 2 pyramidal capped ashlar gatepiers at S, rubble wall adjoining at left and right.
