Description

The Merrick Hotel is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, five-bay, L-plan, piend-roofed, astylar classical former coaching inn located at a prominent road junction on King Street. The building features a 20th-century shop front and has a lower two-storey, two-bay gabled wing at the rear. It is constructed of painted sandstone ashlar, with random rubble on the wing and rear, accented by ashlar dressings. Architectural details include a base course, channelled ashlar at the ground level, a band course that is partially obscured by the later shop front, a corniced cill course at the first floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course.

The first-floor windows have raised, corniced margins, while the second-floor windows are unmargined with projecting cills. The wing and rear also feature raised window margins with projecting cills. The ground floor has a chamfered corner to the right, which is corbelled to a square at the first floor. The building predominantly has 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, although there are four non-traditional uPVC windows on the northwest and southwest elevations. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there are corniced stacks with some yellow clay cans.

Inside, the hotel retains some decorative cornicing and working shutters on some windows.
