Description
Birtwhistle Mills, built in 1785, was formerly the largest cotton mill in Gatehouse of Fleet. In the 1850s, it was converted for bobbin manufacture and continued production until the 1930s. As of 1991, it is undergoing major restoration work. The mill is a three-storey building with a rectangular plan measuring 120 by 30 feet. It is constructed of rubble with dressed margins and some brick infill. The east and west elevations are regular with 12 bays, featuring single light windows that have squared granite lintels. Joist sockets indicate the original floor levels, and it originally had a simple pitched roof. The water wheel that was once located at the south gable has been removed.
