Description

Walton Park is a large house, originally built in 1816 with later additions made in the late 19th century, effectively doubling its size. The original house is a two-storey building with a basement and a double-bow front, constructed from squared rubble with polished raised margins and quoins. A staircase with simple cast-iron balusters extends over the basement to a Roman-Doric engaged column doorpiece. The doorway is semi-circular with pilastered reveals, featuring double panelled doors and a glazed fanlight. The windows are sash and case with 12 or 8-pane glazing. A polished band runs along the building above the basement and at the eaves; a moulded eaves cornice is present, along with a sandstone block pediment above the centre, inscribed with “J.A.C. 1816”. The roof is slate, with tall corniced end stacks topped with octagonal cans. The rear elevation includes a full-height projecting stair tower with a domed roof and a glazed cupola.

A late 19th-century addition is constructed of coursed rock-faced ashlar, comprising a two-bay section with a three-storey tower to the left and a full-height bow to the right. Red sandstone dressings and margins are used throughout the addition, and the tower has bipartite windows. The addition is topped with a mansard slate roof. A single-storey kitchen court is located to the west, at basement level.

The house, formerly known as McCartney, was originally part of the Kilquhanity estate. It was purchased by Major James Campbell (whose initials are inscribed on the pediment), and later altered by his grandson, Thomas Walter Campbell. Walton Park forms part of a group of buildings, including Walton Park Stables and Walton Park Lodge.
