Description

Kilquhanity House School is a two-storey attic and basement classical house, built circa 1810-20, with a lower two-storey L-plan wing added to the southeast in the mid-19th century. The main house is constructed of pinned squared rubble with polished red sandstone dressings and angle margins. Its symmetrical three-bay front features steps leading to a Roman-Doric engaged column porch with a round-arched doorway and fanlight above a double-leaf panelled door. Sash and case windows have a 12-pane glazing pattern, and there is a moulded eaves cornice. The west flank has similarly detailed windows. The rear elevation includes a projecting, full-height semi-circular stair turret with a roof light. The house has hipped slate roofs and tall wallhead stacks with octagonal cans to the east and north.

The L-plan wing is of rubble construction with sandstone margins. The south elevation is three bays with a simple central doorway. Single-light plate glass sash windows are present, and dormers to the first floor have broken pediments. The east elevation is similarly detailed. A further single-storey extension has been added to the rear. Slate roofs are consistent across all parts of the building.

The interior is characterised by plain cornice detail and a tripartite plan, featuring a cantilevered, top-lit stair with simple timber balusters. Most doors are panelled timber, set within typical doorcases.

The building has latterly served as an independent school founded on liberal principles by John Aitkenhead, and was subsequently acquired in 2002 by the Kinokuni Children's Village for education along similar lines. Kilquhanity is considered a good example of a mid-career villa by Walter Newall.
