Description
Hillhead is a farmhouse dating from the late 18th to early 19th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure with an adjoining steading on the east gable. The farmhouse faces north and is constructed of whitewashed rubble with painted ashlar margins. It features a gabled central porch made of brick, which is not original, and has a sunk basement at the west side. The windows are single sashes, with 12-pane glazing on the ground floor and mostly 6-pane glazing on the square first-floor windows, along with timber dormer heads. The building has straight skews and corniced end stacks.
The steading consists of two single-storey, three-bay units. One unit is a byre or shed that has two doors and a window, which adjoins the house, while a taller barn is located beyond it, featuring a single loft window above a square-headed cartway. Additionally, mill gearing is preserved on the east gable. The roofs of the buildings are covered with slate.
