Description

Frank J Carruthers of Dumfries and Lockerbie, circa 1900.

3-storey renaissance-detailed corner block with shops and

hotel. Elaborately-detailed S elevation to High Street with

sculptured ornament at top floor, recessed circular turret

turns corner (wide hotel entrance in canted corner below),

plain (E) elevation to Lady Street. Polished ashlar High

Street elevation has 2 bays with tripartites, balconies to

upper floor on columns supported on stone corbels, elaborate

pedimented heads raised high above eaves level. Further

narrow left bay with oculus at 2nd floor. Turret at angle

with Lady Street has columned mullions and slated dome.

Bull-faced 2-bay E gable, linked pair apex stacks. Rear wing

raised to 3 storeys. Slate roofs.
